Bombay High Court Judge Falls Victim to Online Credit Card Scam, Loses ₹6 Lakh

In a shocking instance of cyber fraud, a sitting judge of the Bombay High Court has reportedly been duped of more than ₹6 lakh in an online credit card reward points scam. The incident has triggered a police investigation after the judge filed a complaint with the Mumbai police.

The Cuffe Parade Police Station in Mumbai has registered a First Information Report (FIR) under provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unidentified cyber fraudsters.

How the Fraud Occurred

According to the FIR, the incident occurred on February 28, 2026, when the judge attempted to redeem reward points accumulated on an HDFC Bank credit card.

While searching online for the bank’s customer care number, the judge found a helpline number appearing in search results and called it, believing it to be an official contact.

The person answering the call allegedly posed as a bank representative and offered to assist in redeeming the reward points. During the interaction, the fraudster sent a WhatsApp link containing an application file and instructed the judge to install it and enter credit card details to process the rewards redemption.

Use of Malicious File

Since the file could not be opened on the judge’s iPhone, the caller reportedly advised inserting the SIM card into another Android phone and opening the file there.

After installing the application and submitting the credit card information, the judge soon received email alerts about multiple transactions being carried out on the card.

According to the complaint, four fraudulent transactions totaling ₹6,02,566 were carried out from the credit card account before the fraud was detected.

Immediate Response

Upon realising the fraud, the judge immediately contacted the bank’s official customer care service and blocked the credit card to prevent further losses. The incident was also reported to the national cybercrime helpline and the online cybercrime portal.

The Mumbai police have now launched an investigation to trace the accused and track the digital trail left by the fraudsters.

Rising Cyber Fraud Concerns

The incident highlights the increasing sophistication of online financial scams, where cybercriminals impersonate bank officials and distribute malicious files or links to steal financial information.

Experts warn that such scams are becoming increasingly common and can affect even highly aware individuals, including members of the judiciary.

एक चौंकाने वाले साइबर अपराध मामले में बॉम्बे हाईकोर्ट के एक वर्तमान न्यायाधीश से ऑनलाइन क्रेडिट कार्ड रिवॉर्ड पॉइंट्स घोटाले में ₹6 लाख से अधिक की ठगी की गई है। इस मामले में न्यायाधीश द्वारा शिकायत दर्ज कराने के बाद पुलिस ने जांच शुरू कर दी है।

मुंबई के कफ परेड पुलिस स्टेशन ने अज्ञात साइबर अपराधियों के खिलाफ सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी अधिनियम, 2000 और भारतीय न्याय संहिता (BNS) के प्रावधानों के तहत एफआईआर दर्ज की है।

धोखाधड़ी कैसे हुई

एफआईआर के अनुसार यह घटना 28 फरवरी 2026 को हुई, जब न्यायाधीश अपने HDFC बैंक के क्रेडिट कार्ड पर जमा रिवॉर्ड पॉइंट्स को रिडीम करने की कोशिश कर रहे थे।

उन्होंने इंटरनेट पर बैंक का कस्टमर केयर नंबर खोजा और सर्च रिजल्ट में दिखाई देने वाले एक नंबर पर कॉल किया, जिसे उन्होंने बैंक का आधिकारिक नंबर समझ लिया।

फोन उठाने वाले व्यक्ति ने खुद को बैंक के क्रेडिट कार्ड विभाग का प्रतिनिधि बताया और रिवॉर्ड पॉइंट्स रिडीम करने में मदद की पेशकश की।

इसके बाद आरोपी ने व्हाट्सएप के माध्यम से एक लिंक भेजा, जिसमें एक एप्लिकेशन फाइल थी और उसे डाउनलोड करके क्रेडिट कार्ड विवरण दर्ज करने के लिए कहा गया।

मैलिशियस फाइल का उपयोग

जब यह फाइल न्यायाधीश के iPhone पर नहीं खुली, तो आरोपी ने उन्हें सलाह दी कि वे अपना सिम कार्ड किसी एंड्रॉयड फोन में डालकर फाइल खोलें।

ऐसा करने के बाद जब उन्होंने क्रेडिट कार्ड का विवरण दर्ज किया, तो कुछ ही समय में उनके ईमेल पर कई लेन-देन की सूचना आने लगी।

शिकायत के अनुसार चार अलग-अलग लेन-देन के माध्यम से कुल ₹6,02,566 की राशि निकाल ली गई।

तत्काल कार्रवाई

धोखाधड़ी का पता चलते ही न्यायाधीश ने तुरंत बैंक के आधिकारिक कस्टमर केयर से संपर्क किया और क्रेडिट कार्ड को ब्लॉक कर दिया।

इसके बाद उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय साइबर क्राइम हेल्पलाइन और साइबर क्राइम पोर्टल पर भी शिकायत दर्ज कराई।

बढ़ते साइबर अपराध

यह घटना दर्शाती है कि ऑनलाइन वित्तीय धोखाधड़ी के तरीके लगातार अधिक जटिल होते जा रहे हैं, जहां अपराधी बैंक अधिकारियों के रूप में खुद को प्रस्तुत करके लोगों को फर्जी लिंक या एप्लिकेशन डाउनलोड करने के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं।

विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि ऐसे साइबर अपराधों से किसी भी व्यक्ति को नुकसान हो सकता है, चाहे वह कितना भी जागरूक क्यों न हो।
