Kerala Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to ‘Manjummel Boys’ Director Chidambaram in Sexual Assault Case
Share:

A sessions court in Kerala has granted anticipatory bail to Malayalam film director Chidambaram S. Poduval, who was recently booked in a sexual assault case based on a woman’s complaint.

The order was passed by the District and Sessions Court, Ernakulam, with District Judge K.K. Balakrishnan allowing the filmmaker’s plea for pre-arrest bail subject to certain conditions.

Allegations Against the Director

According to the prosecution, the alleged incident occurred in May 2022, when Chidambaram allegedly entered the complainant’s bedroom and used criminal force with the intention of outraging her modesty.

Based on the woman’s statement, the Ernakulam South Police registered a case on February 28, 2026, invoking provisions related to sexual harassment and insulting the modesty of a woman.

Bail Application and Court Proceedings

Chidambaram moved the sessions court with an anticipatory bail application on March 3, 2026.

After hearing arguments from both the defence and the prosecution and reviewing the case diary and investigation report, the court reserved its decision before ultimately granting pre-arrest bail.

Defence Arguments

The director argued that the allegations were false and motivated, claiming that the complainant had launched a campaign against him on social media.

He also pointed out that:

  • The alleged incident took place four years earlier in 2022
  • There was no criminal history against him
  • Custodial interrogation was not necessary for the investigation.

Chidambaram further stated that he had already initiated defamation proceedings before the Bombay High Court against the complainant over certain social media posts.

Prosecution’s Stand

The prosecution opposed the bail request, arguing that granting anticipatory bail could interfere with the ongoing investigation and potentially influence witnesses.

Court’s Observations

While granting relief, the court noted several factors, including the delay in filing the complaint, the absence of criminal antecedents, and the nature of the allegations.

The court concluded that custodial interrogation was not necessary at this stage of the investigation and therefore granted anticipatory bail to the filmmaker.

Bail Conditions

The sessions court directed that Chidambaram must:

  • Appear before the investigating officer whenever required
  • Cooperate with the investigation
  • Not intimidate or influence witnesses
  • Not tamper with evidence.

The case remains under investigation, and further proceedings will continue before the competent authorities.
