Centre revokes Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under National Security Act

The Union Government of India has revoked the detention of Ladakh-based climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA), 1980. The decision was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and takes effect immediately.

Wangchuk had been detained since September 26, 2025, following protests in Leh, Ladakh, where demonstrations demanding greater constitutional protections and statehood reportedly turned violent.

Government’s reasons for revoking detention

According to the government’s official statement, the detention was revoked because Wangchuk had already undergone nearly half of the permissible detention period under the NSA. The Centre stated that the move aims to restore peace and create an environment conducive to dialogue with stakeholders in Ladakh.

The order was issued under the powers available to the government under the National Security Act, which allows preventive detention in situations involving threats to public order or national security.

Background of the detention

The activist was detained after protests in Ladakh in September 2025, which escalated into violence. Authorities alleged that speeches and mobilisation linked to the agitation contributed to a serious law-and-order situation in Leh, prompting the District Magistrate to invoke the NSA.

Following his detention, Wangchuk was lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail as part of preventive measures to maintain public order.

Legal challenge before the Supreme Court

Wangchuk’s detention had also been challenged before the Supreme Court of India through a petition filed by his wife Gitanjali J. Angmo. The plea questioned the legality of the preventive detention and sought his release.

The Centre’s decision to revoke the detention came shortly before further hearings in the Supreme Court on the challenge to the NSA order.

भारत की केंद्र सरकार ने लद्दाख के पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता और शिक्षा सुधारक Sonam Wangchuk की National Security Act (NSA) के तहत की गई हिरासत को रद्द कर दिया है। यह निर्णय गृह मंत्रालय (Ministry of Home Affairs) द्वारा लिया गया और तुरंत प्रभाव से लागू किया गया।

वांगचुक को 26 सितंबर 2025 को लद्दाख के लेह में हुए विरोध प्रदर्शनों के बाद हिरासत में लिया गया था। इन प्रदर्शनों के दौरान राज्य का दर्जा और संवैधानिक सुरक्षा की मांग को लेकर आंदोलन हुआ था, जो बाद में हिंसक हो गया था।

हिरासत रद्द करने का कारण

हिरासत की पृष्ठभूमि

सितंबर 2025 में लद्दाख में हुए विरोध प्रदर्शनों के दौरान कानून-व्यवस्था की गंभीर स्थिति पैदा हो गई थी। इसके बाद लेह के जिला मजिस्ट्रेट ने सार्वजनिक व्यवस्था बनाए रखने के लिए NSA के तहत वांगचुक को हिरासत में लेने का आदेश दिया।

हिरासत के बाद उन्हें जोधपुर सेंट्रल जेल में रखा गया था।

सुप्रीम कोर्ट में चुनौती

वांगचुक की पत्नी गीतानजलि जे. अंगमो ने उनकी हिरासत को Supreme Court में चुनौती दी थी और उनकी रिहाई की मांग की थी।

केंद्र सरकार द्वारा हिरासत रद्द करने का निर्णय सुप्रीम कोर्ट में मामले की आगे की सुनवाई से पहले आया।
