Centre Clears Appointment of Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari as Chief Justice of Madras High Court

In a significant judicial appointment, the Central Government has approved the appointment of Justice Sushrut Arvind (S.A.) Dharmadhikari as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

The announcement was confirmed by Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who stated that the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed Justice Dharmadhikari to head the Madras High Court.

Appointment Following Collegium Recommendation

Justice Dharmadhikari’s elevation comes after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his appointment on February 26, 2026. The recommendation followed the impending retirement of the then Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, who demitted office on March 5, 2026.

With the Centre clearing the appointment, Justice Dharmadhikari will assume charge as the new Chief Justice once he takes oath of office.

Current Position and Judicial Background

Prior to this appointment, Justice Dharmadhikari was serving as a Judge of the Kerala High Court. He had been transferred to the Kerala High Court from the Madhya Pradesh High Court in April 2025.

His parent High Court is the Madhya Pradesh High Court, where he served as a judge for several years before his transfer.

Early Life and Legal Career

Justice Dharmadhikari was born on July 8, 1966, in Raipur. He began his legal career in 1992, practicing primarily before the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Over the years, he handled a wide range of matters including civil, criminal, and constitutional cases.

During his practice at the Bar, he also served as Standing Counsel for the Union of India between 2000 and 2015 and represented several government departments and public institutions.

Elevation to the Bench

Justice Dharmadhikari was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on April 7, 2016, and later confirmed as a Permanent Judge on March 17, 2018.

In April 2025, he was transferred to the Kerala High Court, where he continued to serve as a judge until his elevation as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

Leadership of One of India’s Oldest High Courts

The Madras High Court, established in 1862, is one of the oldest High Courts in India and exercises jurisdiction over the State of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Justice Dharmadhikari will succeed Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, who retired upon attaining the age of superannuation on March 5, 2026.

His appointment is expected to bring administrative continuity and judicial leadership to one of India’s busiest constitutional courts.

एक महत्वपूर्ण न्यायिक नियुक्ति में केंद्र सरकार ने जस्टिस सुश्रुत अरविंद (एस.ए.) धर्माधिकारी को मद्रास हाईकोर्ट का मुख्य न्यायाधीश (Chief Justice) नियुक्त करने की मंजूरी दे दी है।

इस नियुक्ति की पुष्टि केंद्रीय कानून एवं न्याय मंत्री अर्जुन राम मेघवाल ने की। उन्होंने बताया कि भारत के राष्ट्रपति ने, भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश से परामर्श के बाद, जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी को मद्रास हाईकोर्ट का मुख्य न्यायाधीश नियुक्त किया है।

सुप्रीम कोर्ट कॉलेजियम की सिफारिश के बाद नियुक्ति

जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी की नियुक्ति सुप्रीम कोर्ट कॉलेजियम की 26 फरवरी 2026 की सिफारिश के बाद हुई है। यह नियुक्ति मद्रास हाईकोर्ट के तत्कालीन मुख्य न्यायाधीश जस्टिस मनिंद्र मोहन श्रीवास्तव की 5 मार्च 2026 को सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद की गई।

वर्तमान पद और न्यायिक पृष्ठभूमि

नियुक्ति से पहले जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी केरल हाईकोर्ट में न्यायाधीश के रूप में कार्यरत थे। उन्हें अप्रैल 2025 में मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट से केरल हाईकोर्ट स्थानांतरित किया गया था।

उनका मूल उच्च न्यायालय मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट है।

प्रारंभिक जीवन और वकालत

जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी का जन्म 8 जुलाई 1966 को रायपुर में हुआ था। उन्होंने 1992 में वकालत शुरू की और लंबे समय तक मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट में सिविल, क्रिमिनल और संवैधानिक मामलों में प्रैक्टिस की।

वकालत के दौरान उन्होंने 2000 से 2015 तक भारत सरकार के लिए स्टैंडिंग काउंसिल के रूप में भी कार्य किया और कई सरकारी विभागों व सार्वजनिक संस्थानों का प्रतिनिधित्व किया।

न्यायाधीश के रूप में नियुक्ति

जस्टिस धर्माधिकारी को 7 अप्रैल 2016 को मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट का अतिरिक्त न्यायाधीश नियुक्त किया गया था और बाद में 17 मार्च 2018 को स्थायी न्यायाधीश बनाया गया।

इसके बाद उन्हें अप्रैल 2025 में केरल हाईकोर्ट स्थानांतरित किया गया, जहां वे मुख्य न्यायाधीश के रूप में नियुक्ति से पहले तक कार्यरत रहे।
