Share:

The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the elevation of ten advocates as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, marking a significant step toward strengthening judicial capacity in one of the country’s busiest High Courts.

Collegium Decision Taken on May 4, 2026

The decision was taken during a Collegium meeting held on May 4, 2026, aimed at addressing the persistent shortage of judges in the High Court.

The Collegium cleared the names of ten advocates for elevation to the bench, reflecting a diverse representation from the Bar.

List of Advocates Recommended for Judgeship

The following advocates have been recommended:

  • Monica Chhibber Sharma
  • Harmeet Singh Deol
  • Puja Chopra
  • Sunish Bindlish
  • Navdeep Singh
  • Divya Sharma
  • Ravinder Malik
  • Pravindra Singh Chauhan (Advocate General of Haryana)
  • Rajesh Gaur
  • Minderjeet Yadav

Notably, the list includes three women advocates, indicating a continued effort to improve gender representation in the higher judiciary.

Key Highlights of the Recommendations

  • Senior Advocate Pravindra Singh Chauhan, currently serving as Advocate General of Haryana, is among those recommended.
  • Advocate Navdeep Singh, known for expertise in military law and his service in the Territorial Army, is also part of the list.
  • The recommendations aim to bring experienced practitioners from diverse legal backgrounds to the bench.

Addressing Judicial Vacancies

The Punjab and Haryana High Court currently faces a significant shortage of judges. Against a sanctioned strength of 85 judges, only about 58 posts are filled, leaving a large number of vacancies.

These appointments are expected to:

  • Reduce case pendency
  • Improve judicial efficiency
  • Strengthen the justice delivery system in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh

Next Step in Appointment Process

Following the Collegium’s recommendation, the proposal will now be forwarded to the Union Government. After necessary approvals and notifications, the recommended advocates will be formally appointed and sworn in as judges.
