Kerala Court grants statutory bail to Smart Creations CEO & jeweller in Sabarimala gold theft case
Share:

A Kerala court (Kollam Vigilance Court) has granted statutory bail to two accused — Pankaj Bhandari (CEO of Smart Creations) and Roddam Pandurangaiah Naga Govardhan (jeweller) — in connection with the high-profile Sabarimala gold theft case, after they spent time in custody without filing of the chargesheet within the prescribed period.

The court granted bail after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) failed to file the chargesheet within 90 days, thereby entitling the accused to default/statutory bail under criminal law.

The case pertains to alleged misappropriation of gold from the Sabarimala temple, where gold-plated structures including Dwarapalaka idols and parts of the Sreekovil (sanctum) were sent for maintenance and re-plating, but discrepancies in gold quantity were later discovered.

According to the prosecution, the accused were involved in a scheme where gold was allegedly extracted during the electroplating process and diverted for personal gain, causing financial loss to the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Investigators had earlier claimed that the extracted gold was sold through intermediaries to jewellers, and recoveries were also made during the probe.

The Court, however, clarified that the grant of statutory bail was not based on merits of the allegations, but solely due to the failure of the investigating agency to comply with the statutory timeline for filing the chargesheet.

The Sabarimala gold theft controversy, which came to light in 2025, involves allegations of large-scale tampering and disappearance of temple gold during repair works, leading to a court-monitored investigation and multiple arrests.

The trial in the matter is expected to continue, and further proceedings will determine the culpability of the accused based on evidence presented before the court.
