Central Government Notifies Appointment of Justice Lisa Gill as Andhra Pradesh High Court Judge

In a significant judicial development, the Central Government has notified the appointment of Justice Lisa Gill as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The notification formally confirms that Justice Gill will join the Andhra Pradesh High Court as a puisne judge (regular judge).

Likely to Become Chief Justice

Justice Gill is expected to assume the position of Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court once the incumbent Chief Justice Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur retires on April 24, 2026.

Her transfer forms part of a new policy adopted by the Supreme Court Collegium, under which judges recommended to become Chief Justices are transferred to the respective High Courts well in advance of the vacancy. This enables them to familiarise themselves with the administration and functioning of the High Court before formally assuming charge.

Career and Legal Background

Justice Lisa Gill enrolled as an advocate in 1990 and practiced primarily before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, handling a wide range of matters including civil, criminal, service, revenue and constitutional cases.

During her legal career, she also represented the Union Territory of Chandigarh and several government boards and corporations.

She was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 31, 2014, and later became a permanent judge of the court the same year.

Justice Gill is also an alumna of the Department of Laws, Punjab University, where she completed both her LLB and LLM degrees.

Once she assumes charge as Chief Justice after the retirement of the incumbent, Justice Gill will become the first woman Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, marking a historic moment for the institution.

इस अधिसूचना के बाद जस्टिस गिल आंध्र प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट में एक नियमित न्यायाधीश (Puisne Judge) के रूप में कार्य करेंगी।
